The Cranberries' music stood out from the mainstream pop scene of the time. Grunge and G-funk had already made a big impact via Nirvana and Dr. Dre when Everybody was released first in the U.K. and later in America. Noel Hogan, the lead guitarist, played a significant role in the band, co-writing all but three songs with O'Riordan, and showing great skill in his playing. With Stephen Street, the long-time producer for The Smiths and Morrissey, behind the mixing board, the right balance of projection and finesse was achieved. Hogan is a fan of Johnny Marr and his playing style, which can be heard in the quick strums and blasts on "Pretty" or the ending of the lovely "Waltzing Back." O'Riordan herself contributes with her romantic and emotional lyrics, and her exceptional vocal range is a perfect fit for the material. The two best songs on the album were the hits: "Dreams," a lively track that combines tension and rock, and the melancholic, string-swept break-up song "Linger." Though Everybody may be a derivative pleasure, it is still a source of enjoyment. It is the work of a young band that expertly blends different styles of music to create a unique sound.
