Rain Dogs pulses with its eccentric instrumentation--marimba, accordion, and various percussion--and bizarre lyrics, carrying on from the flair of Swordfishtrombones. Marc Ribot contributes his soulful guitar chords to the musical medley. Despite being more all-encompassing than its predecessor, hits such as “Hang Down Your Head”, “Time”, and “Downtown Train” (later a Top Ten hit for Rod Stewart) afford a respite of conventional music. Rain Dogs may not astound like Swordfishtrombones, but Waits' ambitious scope and vast array of material make it one of his best albums.
