Pink Floyd - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn - Vinyl Record
Pink Floyd's The Piper at the Gates of Dawn is the band's 1967 debut and the only album made under the primary creative direction of Syd Barrett — a kaleidoscopic masterpiece of British psychedelia that sounds nothing like the progressive rock epics Floyd would later become famous for. Barrett's whimsical, Lewis Carroll-influenced songwriting and experimental guitar work make this one of the most inventive and influential albums of the psychedelic era.
"Astronomy Domine" opens with a disorienting blast of space-rock that immediately establishes Barrett's vision of psychedelia as something darker and stranger than his contemporaries. "Interstellar Overdrive" is a nine-minute improvisation of pure sonic chaos, "Lucifer Sam" purrs with a sinister, catchy riff, and "The Gnome" showcases Barrett's childlike imagination. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios simultaneously while The Beatles made Sgt. Pepper's next door, this is the other great psychedelic album of 1967.
