What Went Down is the heaviest Foals album and the point where the band fully committed to being a rock act rather than a math rock curiosity. Released in 2015 and produced by James Ford, it opens with a title track built on a distorted riff and Yannis Philippakis genuinely screaming, then pulls back for Mountain At My Gates and Birch Tree, two of the most immediate songs they have written. Give It All and London Thunder show they never lost the atmospheric side that made Total Life Forever work. The album took them to festival headline slots, and it is easy to hear why. This 10th anniversary colored vinyl pressing has considerably more punch than the original issue.
