Dua Lipa's debut arrived in 2017 and set up everything that followed. It is a darker, more downtempo record than Future Nostalgia, built on tropical house rhythms and her unmistakably low, unhurried delivery. New Rules became a phenomenon, a breakup song structured like a set of instructions, and IDGAF and Be The One are nearly as strong. Hotter Than Hell and Blow Your Mind (Mwah) show how much attitude she had before the disco reinvention. Where later albums lean euphoric, this one sits in heartbreak and holds there, which gives it a real identity in her catalog. On vinyl the bass heavy production has considerably more weight than compressed streaming allows. A good buy for anyone who came in through Future Nostalgia and wants the origin story.
