Takin' It To The Streets is the album where Michael McDonald joined the Doobie Brothers and quietly changed the band into something else entirely. Released in 1976 after Tom Johnston's health forced him off the road, it moves away from boogie rock guitars toward electric piano, jazz chords and blue eyed soul. The title track, written and sung by McDonald, is one of the great American singles of the seventies, and It Keeps You Runnin' works the same territory. Patrick Simmons keeps the earlier sound alive on Wheels Of Fortune and 8th Avenue Shuffle, which makes the record a genuine hinge point between two versions of the group. This sea blue vinyl pressing handles the keyboard heavy arrangements with real warmth.
