Indie University: Nick Drake

Once in a while, a musician appears who changes the way we think about music. One such artist was Nicholas Rodney Drake, a talented British singer-songwriter whose life was as mysterious as his music. Born in Burma in 1948, Nick Drake grew up in England and learned to play various instruments as a young boy. But it wasn't until his days at Cambridge University that he started to create a truly unique sound that would capture the hearts of many.

Drake's music was different from what others were doing in the 1960s and 70s. His soft, haunting voice and intricate guitar playing created a dreamy, intimate atmosphere that made listeners feel like they were sitting in a quiet room with him. His lyrics were full of poetry, exploring themes of love, loneliness, and nature. Some people say that listening to his songs is like taking a walk through a beautiful, yet slightly spooky forest.

During his short career, Nick Drake released three albums: "Five Leaves Left" in 1969, "Bryter Layter" in 1970, and the somber "Pink Moon" in 1972. Unfortunately, Drake's music didn't gain much popularity during his lifetime. He was a shy person who avoided the spotlight, making it hard for people to discover his music. But even though his albums didn't sell many copies back then, they are now considered classic masterpieces.

Many years after his death, Nick Drake's music found its way to the ears of a new generation of fans. This happened when one of his songs, "Pink Moon," was featured in a 1999 Volkswagen commercial. Suddenly, people started to appreciate his unique sound and wanted to know more about the mysterious artist behind the music.

Tragically, Nick Drake's life was filled with pain and struggle. He battled depression, which made it hard for him to connect with others and enjoy life. On November 25, 1974, at the young age of 26, he passed away from an overdose of antidepressant medication. Some people believe it was a terrible accident, while others think it was a sad and desperate act.

Nick Drake's music has left a lasting impact on the world. His songs have influenced many other musicians, including famous artists like R.E.M., The Cure, and Norah Jones. He may not have experienced fame during his lifetime, but his music continues to inspire people today. Nick Drake's story is a reminder that sometimes the brightest stars burn out too quickly, but their light can still reach us, even from far away.
