Whitney - Candid - Vinyl Record
After the acclaimed Forever Turned Around, Chicago's Whitney returned in 2020 with Candid, a ten-song covers album on Secretly Canadian. Covers had long been part of their live shows, with Allen Toussaint, Dolly Parton and Neil Young turning up in their setlists, but this time the band deliberately reached outside their comfort zone.
The picks run wide: Kelela's "Bank Head", Damien Jurado's "A.M. AM", David Byrne and Brian Eno's "Strange Overtones", Labi Siffre's "Crying, Laughing, Loving, Lying", SWV's "Rain", and a version of John Denver's "Take Me Home, Country Roads" featuring Waxahatchee. It was also the first time Whitney's full touring band recorded together in a studio, working through the songs in sessions in Chicago and Portland.
"We didn't want to beat these songwriters at their own game," drummer and singer Julien Ehrlich said. "Instead, we wanted to find songs that were great at their core and could be molded into our own thing." The result is warm, easygoing indie folk with Ehrlich's falsetto and Max Kakacek's guitar front and center.
A relaxed, generous listen for fans of the band or anyone who enjoys hearing familiar songs made new.
