Twin Plagues is the album that put Wednesday on the map. Karly Hartzman's songwriting is sharp, personal, and lived-in, pulling from shoegaze, indie rock, and country without ever settling into one lane. Jake Lenderman's guitar work swings between delicate fingerpicking and walls of distortion, sometimes within the same song.
The title track opens with a slow, buzzing build before the band locks in. "Handsome Man" is punchy and immediate, "The Burned Down Dairy Queen" hits with raw nostalgia, and "How Can You Live If You Can't Love How Can You If You Do" stretches into one of the most devastating songs the band has written. "Toothache" is a highlight, blending crushing guitar noise with Hartzman's unflinching vocals. "Ghost of a Dog" closes things out in just over two minutes, quiet and unresolved in all the right ways.
Released in 2021 on Orindal Records, Twin Plagues is 34 minutes of Asheville, NC guitar rock at its most honest and unpredictable. This pressing comes on random eco-color recycled vinyl.
