Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers' eponymous debut album was released 40 years ago. Over the decades, Petty has sold over 80 million records worldwide, earned 18 Grammy nominations, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His consistency and craft have remained constant, earning him a multi-generational fan base. The 19-track Greatest Hits compilation, released in 1993, showcases this consistency, featuring songs from 1976 to 1991. The album lingered on Billboard's Top 200 for six years, and also included two new cuts, the hit single "Mary Jane's Last Dance" and a cover of "Something in the Air" by Thunderclap Newman.
