Third Eye Blind's 1997 debut hides some of the darkest lyrics in nineties alternative rock inside some of its brightest hooks. Semi-Charmed Life is a song about crystal meth addiction that soundtracked a decade of summer radio, and How's It Going To Be, Graduate and Jumper all became staples. Stephan Jenkins wrote about self destruction, suicide and burnout with a pop craftsman's ear, and Kevin Cadogan's guitar parts give the record its jangling, layered texture. The album ran nearly an hour and still holds attention front to back, which is rare for a debut this commercially successful. Pressed on grape colored vinyl across two LPs, the mix is fuller than the compressed CD most people grew up with. A nineties cornerstone.
