Thao Nguyen asks on We Brave Bee Stings and All, her 2008 Kill Rock Stars debut with The Get Down Stay Down, and the line describes the record perfectly. Her rich, breathy voice croons, yelps and drawls in a way that recalls Cat Power or Fiona Apple, but the songs underneath are playful rather than searing. Country tinged indie folk pop, mischievous and observant, with just enough vulnerability showing through.
"Beat (Health, Life and Fire)" builds brass, ukulele and piano to a joyous peak, "Bag of Hammers" rambles and hooks in equal measure, and the Dixieland moxie of "Feet Asleep" and the jazzy turns in "Geography" keep the album from ever settling into one mood. Producer Tucker Martine gives the band room to sound fuller and more intuitive together.
This edition is pressed on eco mix gray vinyl. A great place to start with Thao, and an easy one to keep reaching for.
