Fall 1986, and Steve Earle was still a promising newcomer rather than the most argued about man in Nashville. Guitar Town had come out that spring, the follow up was being cut in scraps of time between tour dates, and Austin City Limits put him in front of the cameras with the Dukes to see what he had.
What he had was seventeen songs and a lot of nerve. The set runs through the debut almost front to back, adds a hard swinging cover of Bruce Springsteen's State Trooper, and finishes with The Devil's Right Hand before he had even released it. His voice is in good shape and the band gets stronger as the night goes on, hitting full stride by the fourth side.
It is not the definitive Earle live record, and it is better than that suggests: a snapshot of a writer whose swagger and conscience were already fully formed, caught before the world caught up. Pressed on blue color vinyl across two LPs. Add it to your order below.
