Mars Audiac Quintet, from 1994, is where Stereolab's motorik pulse met genuine pop songwriting. Laetitia Sadier's vocals sit high in the mix, the Farfisa and Moog hum away underneath, and "Ping Pong" smuggles a lesson on boom and bust cycles into the sunniest melody on the record. "Wow And Flutter" and "Nihilist Assault Group" show the other side of the band, all drone and repetition. It is the last album with Sean O'Hagan as a full member and arguably the most approachable entry point in the catalogue. This is part of Duophonic's 2LP reissue series, which brings seven Stereolab albums back to shelves using the 2019 remasters cut from the original half inch tapes by Bo Kondren at Calyx Mastering in Berlin, overseen by Tim Gane. These editions do not carry the bonus material from the discontinued 3LP versions, which keeps the price sensible. Housed in a 5mm spine sleeve with printed inners and a protective PVC outer bag.
