The Natural Bridge is where Silver Jews stopped looking like a Pavement side project. David Berman scrapped the original 1996 sessions with Stephen Malkmus and Bob Nastanovich and started over with Peyton Pinkerton and Matt Hunter of New Radiant Storm King, Drag City's Rian Murphy and keyboardist Michael Deming, and the rebuild gave the record its own weather: loose alt-country arrangements holding up some of the darkest and funniest writing of his career. "How To Rent A Room" opens with a line people still quote back to each other, "Dallas" turns a city into a character, and "Pretty Eyes" closes it with the kind of plain sadness Berman never oversold. Fans of his tend to call this his Nebraska. Released on Drag City in 1996, it is the album to reach for after Starlite Walker, and the one that made clear he was a songwriter first. Essential lo-fi indie rock.
