We've Been Going About This All Wrong, from 2022, is Sharon Van Etten's sixth album and one of her most personal. Made after she moved across the country, married and began raising a family during the pandemic, it looks at how we hold on to what matters when the world feels unsteady.
Van Etten co-produced with Daniel Knowles and recorded and engineered much of it herself in a studio built in her family's Los Angeles home, playing guitar, synths, piano and drum machine with her touring band alongside. She released no singles beforehand, asking listeners to take in the ten songs in order, as one story. "Darkness Fades" opens with a slow-burning build, and "Mistakes" brings a rare burst of defiant energy.
