Sade - Live In London: The Best Of Diamond Life Tour - Vinyl Record
December 1984 at the Hammersmith Odeon, with Diamond Life only months old and Sade Adu already fronting a band that sounded like nothing else on the British charts. The album had arrived that summer and turned a Soho jazz-funk group into a global act almost overnight, and this recording catches them still playing rooms rather than arenas.
The set is essentially Diamond Life performed live and a little looser. "Your Love Is King" and "Smooth Operator" are here, along with "Hang On to Your Love", "Frankie's First Affair" and "Cherry Pie", plus the band's reading of Timmy Thomas's "Why Can't We Live Together" that they had made their own. What comes across is how much of the record's cool was down to the group behind her: the sax lines, the restraint, the space they leave around every vocal.
A hand-numbered pressing limited to 500 copies. For collectors who want Sade at the very beginning, before the polish set in.
