Learning To Crawl is the sound of a band rebuilding after losing two members. Chrissie Hynde brought in new players, wrote about motherhood, mortality and industrial decline, and delivered the Pretenders' most emotionally direct album. Released in 1984, it carries Back On The Chain Gang and Middle Of The Road, two of the finest singles of the decade, along with the deeply sad Show Me and a version of 2000 Miles that became a holiday standard almost by accident. My City Was Gone gave the record its most famous bassline. Hynde's phrasing is unmatched, cool and wounded at the same time. This 40th anniversary remaster on clear vinyl is a clear upgrade over older pressings, especially in the drums.
