Nine Inch Nails, David Bowie - Live At Riverport Amphitheater - 2LP Vinyl Record

The 1995 Outside tour was one of the strangest co-headline bills of the decade: Nine Inch Nails at the peak of The Downward Spiral, David Bowie refusing to play the hits, and a segued middle section where both bands shared the stage. This unauthorized 2LP takes the FM broadcast from the Riverport Amphitheater in Maryland Heights, St. Louis, on October 11, 1995.

What it captures is the handover. The Nine Inch Nails set runs hard through March Of The Pigs, Closer and Wish, then Bowie walks on mid-set and the two acts merge, working through Outside material and the Reznor-flavoured Nite Flights before the older band takes over entirely. Joe The Lion and A Small Plot Of Land show Bowie at his most uncommercial and most alive. Broadcast sound keeps the industrial layers separated instead of collapsing into noise.

Essential listening for anyone who followed either artist through the mid nineties.
