Monophonics invite you to check in to Sage Motel, their fifth studio album, pressed here on opaque natural vinyl for Colemine Records. Produced once again by bandleader Kelly Finnigan, it is the San Francisco group's richest blend yet of heavy soul and psych-rock.
The record is built around a fictional roadside lodge: a 1940s motor court for travelers and truckers that became a bohemian hangout in the '60s and '70s, drew the biggest acts of the era, then slid into a rent-by-the-hour stop once the money ran out. Bookended by "Check In" and "Check Out", the songs trace the big dreams and broken hearts of the people who passed through, from the slow-burning title song to "The Shape Of My Teardrops", "Love You Better" and "Crash & Burn".
Housed in a tip-on gatefold jacket, it is a natural pick for fans of Durand Jones & The Indications, Lee Fields and Temples. Sink into a soft pillow of soulful psychedelia and let this one play front to back.
