Before Minus the Bear were a club-ready machine, they were a Seattle side project of Botch, Kill Sadie and Sharks Keep Moving alumni working out what to do with clean guitars and a pedalboard. They Make Beer Commercials Like This, their 2004 EP for Suicide Squeeze, is the missing link between Highly Refined Pirates and Menos El Oso, and at under half an hour it captures that transition in real time.
Fine + 2 Pts still counts among the band's best openers, charging out with a syncopated stomp that borrows pop's insistence without any of its bubblegum. Let's Play Clowns and Dog Park keep the frenetic guitar work and Jake Snider's detached romantic nostalgia, while I'm Totally Not Down With Rob's Alien trades restlessness for atmosphere and helped write the playbook for a lot of melodic post-rock that followed.
