Meg Lui - Instant Validation - Magenta Color Vinyl Record
Meg Lui's debut album Instant Validation arrives on magenta vinyl from Asthmatic Kitty, produced by Sufjan Stevens. If her voice sounds familiar, you have likely heard it already: she sang backing vocals on Stevens' Javelin and John Legend's My Favorite Dream before stepping out front with this record.
Born in Northern California and settled in the Catskills, Lui writes folk-pop with a sunny '60s and '70s breeziness and a sharp sense of humor. The songs are populated by a wonderfully surreal cast: anthropomorphic flowers, sea monsters, Elvis Presley and the doomed lovers of Greek myth. "Elvis Queen" is a sprawling tribute to her late aunt, "Andromeda" turns mythology into a love song, and the title track pokes fun at our relationship with our phones. There is also a starry-eyed cover of The Cranberries' "Dreams" featuring Stevens himself.
Recorded over a year of sessions, much of it at Stevens' home studio upstate, it is a warm, generous debut and a lovely first pressing to own.
