K.D. Lang - Even Cowgirls Get the Blues: Soundtrack - Blue Color Vinyl Record
Gus Van Sant's 1993 adaptation of the Tom Robbins novel was mauled by critics on release. The soundtrack came out of it intact, and it is the reason people still talk about the film at all. k.d. lang wrote and sang the whole thing with Ben Mink, fresh off the enormous success of Ingenue, and treated a movie score as a chance to make a proper album rather than a set of cues.
Just Keep Me Moving is the obvious highlight, a loose limbed pop song that became a club record once the remixers got to it, and Lifted By Love did the same. Hush Sweet Lover and In Perfect Dreams show the torch singer voice that won her the Grammys, while the short instrumental interludes give it the strange, wandering shape of the story it was written for.
