Jamila Woods - Water Made Us - Arctic Swirl Color Vinyl

Jamila Woods built her name on records that looked outward, at Chicago and at Black history. Her third album turns the lens around. Water Made Us, released in 2023, is about falling in love, staying in it, and surviving the end of it, and it is easily her most personal writing.

Chris McClenney produces most of it, with fellow Chicagoans Saba and Peter CottonTale turning up on "Practice" and "Thermostat". The poet in Woods shapes the whole sequence: seventeen tracks, several of them under a minute, arranged so short spoken fragments run between the full songs and keep the record moving like a thought rather than a playlist. The title nods to Toni Morrison's line about water having perfect memory and always trying to return where it was, which is the argument the album makes about love as well.

This copy is the limited Arctic Swirl colour pressing. Woods writes love as an open sea, warm and deep at its best and a riptide at its worst, and takes every wave as a way back to herself.
