Husker Du - New Day Rising - Vinyl Record
Hüsker Dü's third studio album, New Day Rising, arrived on SST Records in 1985 and captured the Minneapolis trio in mid-transformation. The breakneck tempos of their hardcore roots are still here, but Bob Mould and Grant Hart had begun burying big, unmistakable pop melodies under the roar of distortion.
Recorded in July 1984 at Nicollet Studios in Minneapolis, the album opens with a title track that chants itself into a frenzy, then moves into Hart's yearning "The Girl Who Lives on Heaven Hill" and Mould's bittersweet "Celebrated Summer," one of the band's finest songs. "Books About UFOs" adds a bouncing piano, and the closing "Plans I Make" collapses into glorious noise.
Countless alternative rock bands have pointed to records like this one as a blueprint. Pick up this SST pressing and hear where it began.
