Heaven is Whenever made me pause and think - it wasn't easy to create. Nevertheless, revisiting the songs for this reissue reignited my admiration for the collection. It's become clear now that we were aiming for something else, and this album was essential to our transition. The tracks are solemn, but with a subtle wit. Probably the funniest Hold Steady release, though its comedic nature is hard to spot, lacking the prior discs' jubilant spirit. Back then we'd just lost Franz and had endured too much touring - we were worn-out and weighed down by our own expectations. I personally felt the pressure of producing our 5th album, a feat not many other bands accomplished. It proved a challenge, recording in starts and stops. Issues even forced us to leave Dreamland Studios at one point. In hindsight, I'm proud of Heaven is Whenever. The music confronts suffering intimately and, through the extra songs, reflects our commitment
