Released for the band's sixtieth anniversary, this is the Grateful Dead condensed to nine songs, which is a slightly absurd idea for a group whose reputation rests on hours long improvisation. It works anyway. The first half is the studio run of 1970, when Workingman's Dead and American Beauty turned the Dead into a songwriting band: Casey Jones, Friend Of The Devil, Box Of Rain, Sugar Magnolia and Truckin' back to back.
The second half follows the road forward. Scarlet Begonias from Mars Hotel, Fire On The Mountain from Shakedown Street, Estimated Prophet from Terrapin Station, and Touch Of Grey, the unlikely 1987 hit that put them on the radio for the first and only time.
