Freedy Johnston - Can You Fly - Clear Color Vinyl Record

Freedy Johnston's second album is the record that made his name, and this clear colour pressing brings it back after a long stretch out of print. Released on Bar/None in 1992, Can You Fly is a songwriter's album in the plainest and best sense: thirteen tightly drawn character studies about drifters, wheels, weddings and small disasters, sung in a voice that never oversells the heartbreak. Johnston famously sold the family farmland to fund the sessions, and you can hear the stakes in it.

The songs run from the wide-open jangle of "Trying to Tell You I Don't Know" to the quiet devastation of "The Mortician's Daughter," with the title track long since a fixture of the 1990s singer-songwriter canon. Robert Christgau graded it A+ in The Village Voice, and Fast Folk placed it in its top ten for the year.

This reissue was remastered for vinyl by Scott Hull, which suits a record built on acoustic detail and close vocals. Pressed on clear vinyl and worth grabbing while the colour edition lasts.
