It's the 10th anniversary of the record that started it all for PROMISES. When we first released ELAENIA, Sam Shepherd had already made a name for himself as a globe-trotting DJ and for creating the iconic club Plastic People in London with his friends. He dedicated over five years to this album, even inventing (or maybe just building) an instrument that could draw the album cover, inspired by the music itself. This was his very first full-length release, and he truly rose to the challenge: blending broken beat, spiritual jazz, and krautrock, earning rave reviews — including some of the highest scores from Pitchfork that year, back when those mattered. Even before the album dropped, it was the music Pharoah Sanders first heard by him that laid the groundwork for their future collaboration. A lot has happened over the past decade, but this record still hits just as hard — and more than anything, it shows where he came from. This special, limited edition anniversary release features a new bonus track on the LP (“Precursor”) and comes with the KUIPER EP, all housed in a beautifully hand-numbered gatefold jacket.
