At Last! is where Etta James announced herself as one of the great voices of American music. Her debut album for Chess Records' Argo imprint, recorded in Chicago in 1960, paired her raw, gospel-tinged contralto with lush string arrangements by Riley Hampton, and the contrast still sounds thrilling.

The title song became her signature and one of the most beloved recordings of the twentieth century, but the whole album rewards a front-to-back listen. James moves easily from tender standards like Stormy Weather, A Sunday Kind of Love and Trust in Me to the grit of Willie Dixon's Spoonful and I Just Want to Make Love to You, blurring the line between rhythm and blues, jazz and early soul. All I Could Do Was Cry, a hit in its own right, shows the heartbreak she could pack into a single phrase.

This Destination Moon reissue is pressed on clear vinyl and issued as a numbered edition limited to 500 copies. A beautiful copy of an essential vocal album for any jazz or soul shelf.
