Durand Jones & The Indications took a sharp, glorious left turn on Private Space. Their third album trades the raw, lo-fi soul of their Indiana basement recordings for lush, wide-screen disco-funk — think Bee Gees falsetto harmonies meeting Earth, Wind & Fire grooves filtered through an indie soul lens. Written while the band was separated during the pandemic, the songs reflect both the isolation of that era and the yearning to reconnect.
Aaron Frazer's crystalline falsetto and Durand Jones's warm baritone weave together throughout, with "Witchoo" channeling late-night roller rink funk, "Love Will Work It Out" building an irresistible dancefloor anthem from Philly soul strings, and the title track floating on pillowy synths. Mixed by Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, MGMT) and released on Dead Oceans, Private Space proved the Indications could reinvent themselves without losing what made them essential. Pressed on random eco-vinyl — each copy is a one-of-a-kind color from recycled material.
