Dead Can Dance - Within the Realm of a Dying Sun - Vinyl Record
With Dead Can Dance now built around the core duo of Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard, the band released their third album, Within the Realm of a Dying Sun, on 4AD in 1987. It showed a new maturity in their sound and helped widen their audience well beyond the post-punk scene they emerged from.
The eight songs are split neatly between the two. The first half belongs to Perry, whose rich baritone carries "Anywhere Out of the World" and "Xavier." The second half belongs to Gerrard, whose wordless, otherworldly voice soars over "Cantara" and the slow, funereal "Persephone (The Gathering of Flowers)." Strings, brass, timpani and chant-like vocals give the album a solemn, cinematic grandeur that still sounds like nothing else.
The cover adds to the mystery: a photograph of the Raspail family tomb at Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. This 4AD reissue is remastered and comes with a printed inner sleeve. Best heard with the lights down.
