Dead Can Dance - The Serpent's Egg - Vinyl Record
The Serpent's Egg is the 1988 album from Dead Can Dance, the duo of Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry, and one of the defining records in the 4AD catalog. Here the pair moved further from their post-punk roots toward something older and more sacred, drawing on medieval chant, Middle Eastern melody and the sound of vast stone spaces.
It opens with "The Host of Seraphim," Gerrard's wordless, soaring vocal over a slow drone, a piece so powerful it later became the emotional centerpiece of the film Baraka. Perry's rich baritone takes the lead on "Severance" and "The Writing on My Father's Hand," while "Chant of the Paladin" and "Echolalia" show how much atmosphere the duo could build from voice, strings and percussion. The whole album plays like a single, hypnotic piece, ideal for fans of ethereal, neoclassical and darkwave music.
This 4AD reissue comes with a printed inner sleeve. Lower the lights and let it carry you away.
