Psychic... Powerless... Another Man's Sac was the Butthole Surfers' first full-length album, released in 1984, and it captures a band that already sounded like no one else. By this point their live shows were legendary for strobes, smoke, nudity and noise, and the record channels that same deranged energy onto tape.
Parts of the album bury their hardcore punk roots under layers of grunts, babble and studio trickery, while other stretches spill into a mutant form of garage blues or simply spiral out of control. Concubine and Lady Sniff are pure sonic mayhem, Cherub is a slow, menacing crawl, and Mexican Caravan shows off a strange, almost catchy swagger.
This 2024 remaster on Matador brings a cult classic back to vinyl with new clarity while keeping all of its glorious mess intact. For fans of noise rock, psychedelic punk and the wilder corners of eighties American underground music, this is a foundational record.
