Before Damaged made Henry Rollins the face of Black Flag, the band had already spent four years rewriting what American punk could sound like. The First Four Years gathers that early output on one SST LP, running from the debut Nervous Breakdown EP through the Jealous Again EP, the "Six Pack" single, compilation contributions and the band's bruising take on "Louie Louie".
It is also the only place to hear Black Flag's three pre-Rollins singers in a single sitting. Keith Morris snarls through the first four songs, Ron Reyes takes over for the Jealous Again material, and Dez Cadena fronts most of the later cuts. Through it all, Greg Ginn's jagged, atonal guitar and the band's sheer velocity set the template that hardcore would follow for years. Most of these sixteen songs are over in under two minutes.
For anyone tracing hardcore back to its roots, this is where the story starts. Add it to your punk shelf.
