Bill Withers was 31 and bolting lavatories into Boeing 747s at a Los Angeles aircraft plant when he wrote "Ain't No Sunshine." He'd already spent nine years in the Navy, where speech therapy helped him beat a childhood stutter, and he kept the factory job even after signing to Sussex — the cover of his 1971 debut shows him on the assembly floor holding his lunch pail. Booker T. Jones produced, Stephen Stills played guitar, and when Withers left "I know" repeating 26 times as a placeholder, the room told him to keep it. The label sent him a gold-plated toilet seat when the single went gold.

Sixteen tracks trace the whole 18-year run: "Lean On Me," "Use Me," "Grandma's Hands," "Lovely Day," the Grover Washington Jr. duet "Just The Two Of Us," and "Harlem" — the A-side that DJs flipped over to find "Ain't No Sunshine."
