Artifacts began as a way to give a handful of early Beirut EPs a proper physical home, and grew into something far bigger. Digging through old hard drives for a few bonus tracks, Zach Condon surfaced an entire second record of music from his formative years and remixed and remastered the whole lot. Spread across four sides, the collection traces Beirut from a teenager in New Mexico chasing Balkan brass and French chanson on a four track to the fully realized band behind Elephant Gun and Scenic World. The Lon Gisland EP sits alongside the Transatlantique and O Leaozinho releases, the rarities of The Misfits, a run of early works and a closing side of B sides. For collectors it is the missing shelf between the singles and the studio albums, and for newcomers it is a surprisingly warm way in. A double LP on Pompeii, and a genuinely rewarding listen front to back.
