Nobody expected this one. For their sixth album Arctic Monkeys put the guitars down, sat Alex Turner at a Vox Continental organ, and built a lounge record set in a hotel on the moon. Produced by Turner with James Ford across sessions in Los Angeles, Paris and London, Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino is all piano, tape saturation and crooned science fiction, closer to 70s Bowie and Serge Gainsbourg than to anything on their early albums. It divided people on release in 2018 and has aged into one of the most admired records they have made, with "Four Out of Five", "Star Treatment" and "The Ultracheese" leading the way. This pressing is on 180 gram vinyl, which suits an album this quiet and detailed. A rewarding listen for anyone willing to check in.
