Annie Lennox brought her unmistakable voice to the carols she loves on A Christmas Cornucopia, first released in 2010. Rather than lighthearted seasonal pop, she treats traditional songs like "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", "The Holly and the Ivy", "In the Bleak Midwinter" and the "Coventry Carol" with real gravity, backed by rich orchestral arrangements and the African Children's Choir. Her own composition "Universal Child" sits naturally among them.
This 10th anniversary edition, issued by Island in 2020, is remastered with new artwork and a fresh running order made for vinyl. It also adds a previously unreleased recording: Lennox's haunting take on "Dido's Lament" from Henry Purcell's opera Dido and Aeneas, which closes the record beautifully.
Elegant, reflective and a little mysterious, it is a holiday album that works well beyond December. A thoughtful gift, or a lovely one to keep for yourself.
