American Football - American Football - Red & Black Color EP Vinyl
Before the album, there was this. Three songs cut in Urbana, Illinois in 1998 by guitarist and vocalist Mike Kinsella (Owen, Cap'n Jazz, Joan Of Arc), guitarist Steve Holmes and drummer Steve Lamos, whose jazz-schooled timing gives the whole thing its unusual gait.
The EP is where the band's language arrives fully formed: guitars in odd tunings circling each other, a trumpet line surfacing where a chorus would be, vocals that sound half-spoken. The One With The Tambourine and Five Silent Miles still turn up new details on the twentieth listen, and Five Silent Miles has followed the band around ever since, resurfacing on live recordings decades later.
For a decade these three songs and the nine on the self-titled debut were all the band ever released. In 2008, after years of requests, Polyvinyl finally pressed the EP as a one-sided 12 inch with new photography by Chris Strong. This pressing is on red and black color vinyl.
