 The world of pop had yet to comprehend The Velvet Underground when they released their first album in spring 1967, but while The Velvet Underground and Nico test the limits of rock music, White Light/White Heat, devoid of Nico or Warhol, showed their roughest and rawest energy. Kicking off with an ode to amphetamines, the first side proceeded with a R&B-driven shaggy-dog story and an eerie folktale. Side two, however, pushed their audacity even further with "I Heard Her Call My Name"; Reed's frenzied guitars, and the epic "Sister Ray", 17 minutes of debauchery. White Light/White Heat may be impenetrable, but those wanting their Velvets at their most wild, must crank it up to ten.
