Before he became a central figure in New York's totalist movement, composer Mikel Rouse led Tirez Tirez, a Kansas City band that blended new wave, minimalism and experimental pop. They opened for Talking Heads in 1978, earned David Byrne's support, and soon moved east into the same downtown orbit as Arthur Russell.
Story of the Year captures that move. Drawing on earlier sessions and later recordings made in New York and Brussels, it first appeared on Les Disques du Crépuscule in 1983 and was only ever issued in Europe. Hypnotic post-punk rhythms, wiry saxophone lines and sharply fractured arrangements carry Rouse's early system-based writing, with phase-based repetition pressing against a pop pulse that sounds made for the Danceteria floor.
Numero Group's 2026 reissue brings this long-sought record back to vinyl. Start with "This Is New York" and "Living In This City", then let the whole thing play. A sharp find for fans of Talking Heads, Arthur Russell, ESG or The Lounge Lizards.
