Writing about music is supposedly like dancing about architecture. Singing about movies, it turns out, works far better. A Beginner's Mind is the 2021 collaboration between Sufjan Stevens and Angelo De Augustine, fourteen songs loosely based on films the pair watched together while holed up in a cabin in upstate New York.
The source material swings from highbrow to schlock and the songs never treat either with contempt. Musically it sits close to Simon and Garfunkel, two voices in close harmony over acoustic guitar, with the New Age flourishes and melancholy folk idioms both writers are known for. Lady Macbeth In Chains and Back To Oz turn familiar stories into something private and strange.
The artwork came from Daniel Anum Jasper, a pioneer of Ghanaian hand-painted movie poster art, commissioned to make new works for the album. By turning old films into new songs, Stevens and De Augustine ask you to look at yourself from an angle you had not considered.
