Spoon and Rafter is the album where Mojave 3 pushed their sound wide open. Released in 2003 on 4AD, the band's fourth record trades the stripped-back folk of earlier work for a Technicolor palette of electronics, glockenspiels, melodica, and layered studio production.
Recorded at their own studio on the north Cornish coast, Neil Halstead and the band took their time experimenting with new instruments and arrangements. "Bluebird of Happiness" is the album's sprawling centerpiece, stitched together from three separately recorded sections into one orchestrated whole. "Battle of the Broken Hearts" and "Hard to Miss You" balance pop hooks with the band's trademark warmth, while "Bill Oddity" and "Too Many Mornings" lean into the record's more adventurous, textured side.
The most ambitious Mojave 3 album, and a rewarding one for listeners willing to follow them there.
