Land of Talk - Indistinct Conversations - Vinyl Record

Indistinct Conversations is the fourth full-length from Montreal's Land of Talk, released by Saddle Creek in July 2020 after a pandemic delay. It followed 2017's acclaimed Life After Youth, the band's first album in seven years.

All eleven songs were written by Elizabeth Powell, who produced and arranged them with bandmates Mark "Bucky" Wheaton on drums and keys and Christopher McCarron on bass. The trio recorded in a studio McCarron built in Wheaton's basement, and that setting gives the album the intimacy of a private document. It's dreamier and more acoustic-driven than earlier Land of Talk records, yet it keeps every hallmark of their sound: silvery vocals, masterful and at times cacophonous guitar, and stream-of-consciousness lyrics at their most emotionally honest. Powell has described the songs as a therapeutic space to retreat from the world.

"Diaphanous", "Footnotes", "Compelled" and "Now You Want To Live In The Light" are standouts, and the closing title song fades out on fragments of overheard conversation. A quietly beautiful record that rewards a full, uninterrupted listen.
