Future Nostalgia landed in the spring of 2020 and gave a very strange year its dance floor. Dua Lipa built the record around late seventies and early eighties disco and funk without letting it become a costume, so the basslines and string stabs sit under modern pop production. Don't Start Now is the obvious highlight, but Physical, Hallucinate and Levitating are just as relentless, and Love Again pulls off a sample flip that most producers would fumble. There is almost no filler across eleven tracks, which is rare for a pop album of this size. On vinyl the mix breathes more than it does on streaming, especially in the percussion. One of the defining pop records of the decade and a reliable pick for anyone who wants their turntable to keep a room moving.
