Devo came out of Kent State with a theory about human de-evolution and turned it into some of the smartest art rock ever to reach the charts. Whip It made them famous and slightly misunderstood, but Girl U Want, Freedom Of Choice, Jocko Homo and their dismantling of Satisfaction are the real argument. Mark Mothersbaugh and Gerald Casale built the template that synth pop, industrial and electroclash all borrowed from.
