Electric is the record where The Cult burned off the last of their gothic haze. Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy scrapped an earlier, murkier version of the album, went to New York, and handed it to Rick Rubin, who stripped the reverb away and left nothing but Duffy's guitar and a drum sound you could hit a wall with. What came back in 1987 was a straight hard rock album, unapologetic about its debt to AC/DC and Zeppelin, and it turned "Love Removal Machine" and "Lil' Devil" into the songs that broke the band in America.
This is the Japanese edition on Victor, catalogue VIL-28077, a gatefold pressing that includes the Japanese lyric and information insert. Victor's pressing plant gave the record something the Beggars Banquet issue did not: a quiet, well-cut surface that lets Rubin's dry drum sound land the way it was mixed to, plus a gatefold and lyric insert that Japanese buyers of 1987 were far more likely to keep intact.
