It’s the first studio album from Car Seat Headrest in five years, titled ‘The Scholars.’ Will Toledo, the creative force behind the band, drew inspiration from a wide range of classics—from Shakespeare to Mozart, and even classical opera—to craft the lyrics and story arc of ‘The Scholars.’ Meanwhile, the music beautifully echoes the tradition of great rock story cycles, like The Who’s ‘Tommy’ and David Bowie’s ‘Ziggy Stardust.’ Toledo shares, “One thing that can be a struggle with rock operas is that the individual songs kind of get sacrificed for the flow of the plot,” he explains. “I didn’t want to sacrifice that to keep the narrative smooth. So, each song is like a character, stepping into the spotlight with its own dance and story.” Initially, Car Seat Headrest was Toledo’s solo project, but now it’s a full band. “What we’ve been doing more of lately is just tuning into each other’s energies,” Toledo says. “It wasn’t until this record that I really felt that internal, communal vibe come alive. It’s become much more of a band feeling for me—a wonderful evolution.
