If a debut is meant to be a first impression, The Belair Lip Bombs made a vivid one. Lush Life is ten tracks of Naarm and Melbourne indie rock built on longing, restlessness and the search for something more satisfying, and it is carried by Maisie Everett's writing and unhurried, slightly deadpan vocal. Mike Bradvica on guitar, Liam De Bruin on drums and Jimmy Droughton on bass give the songs a loose jangle that recalls the best of Australian guitar pop without leaning on it. Say My Name, Gimme Gimme and Stay Or Go are the obvious hooks, though Easy On The Heart and Suck It In are where the record shows its range. Recorded at Head Gap and Singing Bird studios with Nao Anzai mixing and mastering, and reissued worldwide by Third Man Records after breaking through at home. A good first record to live with.
